“The metal press in the UK found it somewhat hard to swallow – I think they felt that we were doing something ‘impure’ with heavy metal, which was completely our intention.”
This issue, we talk to Justin K Broadrick about the making of Godflesh’s magnum opus, Streetcleaner. Released in 1989, the seminal album paved the way for entirely new strands of metal, pioneering everything from industrial to post-metal with its unremitting mechanical bludgeoning. Now bolstered with additional unreleased tracks on this month’s Deluxe Reissue, it stands as one of the most influential and essential releases of the last two decades.
